Tips on Selecting Epilepsy Treatment Drugs
Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder whereby the individual experience several seizures. This neurological disorder is experienced by many people across the world. AIDS, stroke, meningitis and traumatic brain injury are believed to be the main causes of epilepsy. There is a chance that a person can inherit the neurological disorder from his parents if one them has the condition. There are things which have been classified as triggers when it comes to epileptic conditions. Stress, lack of sleep, alcohol and illness are some if the triggers that an individual may face if he has the epileptic condition. Epilepsy occurs due to a combination of the triggers it even other causes that might not be known. Managing the condition requires that the doctor should identify the type of seizures an individual experiences. The two main types of seizures are focal seizures and generalized seizures. In each the two cause different reactions in individuals with focal causing dizziness, loss of five senses and twitching of limbs while generalized seizures cause loss of bladder and jerking movement of legs and arms.
Epilepsy treatment drugs are based on the kind of seizures the person experiences. The side effects of the two types of medication drugs for epilepsy are different. The first drug which is known as the broad spectrum anti- epilepsy drugs mainly treats more than one type of seizures and the effects are insomnia, fatigue and dizziness. The narrow spectrum anti-epilepsy medication is mainly used to manage specific seizures that the person has and the side effects differ depending on which formulation has been administered to the epileptic person. The narrow spectrum anti-epilepsy medication is administered as a solution, oral table or IV injection. These drugs are effective in managing the seizures a person has due to epilepsy. The triggers that a person has identified are mostly used to show the effectiveness of the drugs. The condition needs to be managed since there are various risk factors.
When the anti-epilepsy drugs have not worked the person still has some options. The options available when the medication doesn’t work include the vagus nerve stimulation and brain surgery. There is a stimulator placed under the epileptic person skin which sends electrical activity to the brain that prevents the seizures. In brain surgery the part that causes seizures is removed but the process is final when it came me to treating epilepsy. Those patients with epilepsy and have taken drugs yet the condition stagnates can take the ketogenic diet since most people have benefited from it.
